TikTok Shop is the first channel in years that genuinely changes the math for small brands: the storefront lives inside the feed, so the distance between someone seeing your product and buying it is one tap. But most brands set it up wrong — or set it up and then treat it like a regular social account. Here's the short version of doing it right.

1. Get approved before you need it

Seller approval requires business verification and can take days. Do it now, before a piece of content pops and you have nowhere to send the demand. You'll need your business information, bank details, and — if you sell in regulated categories — extra documentation. Start the application on day one of caring about TikTok.

2. Sync your catalog, don't rebuild it

If your store runs on a real platform, connect it so products, prices, and inventory sync automatically. Manually re-listing products is how you end up selling stock you don't have. The integration also means orders flow into your existing fulfillment routine instead of a second dashboard you forget to check.

3. Content that converts is not content that entertains

The videos that sell on TikTok Shop are rarely the ones that chase trends. They're simple: the product on a person, in real light, with a plain answer to 'what is this and why would I want it' — then the product tag doing the work. Post consistently around your inventory: new arrivals, restocks, how-to-wear, what's-almost-gone. Tag the product in every single video. The tag is the store.

4. Affiliates: other people's audiences, your products

The affiliate program is the most underused part of TikTok Shop. You set a commission, creators find your products and sell them to their audiences, and you pay only on results. For a small brand, this is the cheat code: you don't need followers — you need creators whose followers match your customer. Seed a few free products to the right micro-creators and let the commission structure do the recruiting.

5. Catch the demand you created

TikTok creates demand faster than it converts it. A viewer who doesn't buy tonight should hit your site tomorrow through your link-in-bio, get caught by your email popup, and see your retargeting. TikTok Shop works best as the tip of a funnel that you actually own the rest of — which is why we never set it up alone; it plugs into the store, the list, and the tracking as one machine.
